Dressage doldrums, horse not responsive? Ask advice here
young horse schooling

Postby kaf09 on Thu Jul 23, 2009 10:40 am

Hiyaa, im new to Horsemart Forum
but thought this could be the place to go for some advice :)

I've recently bought a 7year old, 15.2 hanoverian, Patrick!
He's been out of work for a year or so, maybe more, but has BUNDLES of talent, just needs brought back
i was told he can be " quirky undersaddle" when i bought him, but hes yet to show any bad behaviour at all!
anywayy
we've taken it all back to basics, did about three weeks of lunging and walking out in hand, i've now ridden him about three times, just on the lunge and a little off the lunge
i'll start having lessons as soon as possible
but untill then i wondered if anyone had any advice on where to start at this crutial stage of his learning?
i've been trying to encourage long and low, and he seems to be responding well

any advice would be appreciated :D
thanks

Sounds to me like you're doing fantastically well under your own steam :)

Maybe he was "quirky" with his last owner because something wasn't suiting him which you've inadvertantly corrected?

Now I would teach the horse to go forward and respond to all the aids. Lots of circling to encourage the bend and flexion work. All this at all three paces and always in that same position "long and low". In this way your horse will develop muscles and become obedient and responsive while always stating relaxed and chilled.
What you are doing sound great, keep going.

I have found a ridden training download site www.iridetraining.co.uk and have used several of their ridden downloads. i have found it works perfectly when you are between lessons or wanting to make sure you are training on the correct lines, esp if like me you can run out of ideas and exercises.
I have used several of Amy Stovold's as well as local trainer Alison Short and am gradually building myself a library which i can choose which download im ready for...def worth a look hope it helps :D
