Height: Whilst there is no height restriction, they tend to be between 16.1h (165cm) and 16.3h (170cm).

History: The Selle Francais, or in its native language ‘Le Cheval du Selle Francais’ (French saddle horse)is a sports horse originating from France, as the name suggests, and is similar in stature to that of a warmblood. The breed is a relatively recent development, with the first stud book being published in 1965.
They are the result of a quest for the ultimate sports horse, and are graded for breeding according to their jumping ability, movement and conformation.
The Selle Francais was mainly developed in Normandy, and owes much of its characteristics to the Anglo-Norman horse, refining the breed by crossing with breeds such as Trotters, Thoroughbreds and Arabians.
Temperament: The breed are highly intelligent, willing and gentle by nature – a testament again to the highly scientific system by which the breed has been produced.
Uses: Whilst the Selle Francais is most famous noted for their exceptional showjumping ability, their select breeding processes and grading have ensured they are suited to a variety of disciplines, from eventing to dressage, and even racing due to the Thoroughbred influence.
Famous examples: There are many fine examples of the breed particularly in the showjumping world.
Galoubet A was foaled in 1972, and recorded an illustrious career before being retired to stud aged 10. Highlights include winning 19 Grand Prix, winning the FEI World Cup Jumping league in 1981, and being a member of the team winning Gold at the Showjumping World Championships in 1982.
His progeny are also highly thought of, with inherent talent. The small but tough stallion Quick Star achieved success at the highest level under Meredith Michael-Beerbaum, and his offspring in turn continue to perform on the world stage today. Currently the UK’s Nick Skelton is achieving enormous success with Big Star.
