The Paso Fino originated in Spain from the Barb and was transported by explorers across the globe to several countries including Puerto Rico, Mexico, Columbia and Cuba. What makes this breed special is its unique lateral gait, which is completely natural. There are three distinct variations within the gait: the Paso Largo, Paso Corto and Classic Fino.

The Classic Fino is usually only seen in show horses and the steps are short and rapid, giving the impression of lots of energy although the horse’s forward movement is actually very slow. The Paso Corto is similar in speed to a working trot and covers more ground than the Classic Fino. The Paso Largo is the speed of a canter and there is further extension of the steps.

The gait is so smooth that the rider can carry a glass of champagne and not spill a drop. Their movement is said to actually ease stiffness in joints and promote good circulation. Paso Finos are also famous for their stamina, which makes them particularly good at endurance, although they are also used for showing and western sports.

The stud has an internationally approved breeding program and has a growing stock of stallions, mares and foals.
