The Palomino is not strictly a breed but a horse with a golden coloured coat, although in the USA the palomino is recognised as a breed. A number of breeds are recognized as being Palomino horses such as American Saddlebred, Morgan, Quarterhouse and Tennessee walking horse.
The physical characteristics of the Palomino horse vary according to breeding, but the coat is always shades of golden with a cream, or almost white, mane and tail. Palomino colours are described from cremello, an almost-white color, to a deep, dark, chocolate color ("chocolate palomino"). A perfect Palomino would be described as having a coat like a newly minted gold coin.
