The Morgan horse is muscular and compact in appearance, with a large, expressive face and eyes. The Morgan horse has loose, relaxed shoulders and an arched neck and a smooth head.
They can come in a combination of colours, but they are most commonly found as bay, black or chestnut. Less common varieties can be found in gray, palomino, roan, cremello, perlino, dun, buckskin, and silver dapple.
In the past, Morgan horses were most popularly used for harness racing due to their trotting ability, but they have also been used as cavalry mounts.
Nowadays they are used as show horses, in a number of show classes, but mostly in driving classes. There is an American show circuit just for this breed of horse.
