Cleveland Bay

The Cleveland Bay Horse is the oldest breed of English horse dating back to medieval times. Her Majesty the Queen has kept Cleveland Bays at the Royal Mews since King George V introduced them and still actively breeds Cleveland’s for state and ceremonial duties, at all state events the Royal Cleveland Bays will be seen drawing the state coaches carrying members of the royal family. The numbers of Cleveland Bay horses are dropping rapidly; it is one of the rarest breeds in Britain and currently has a critical rating on the Rare Breeds Survival List.

The Cleveland Bay horse stands 15.2hh to 17hh

The Cleveland Bay has a large head with convex face, long strong neck, sloping shoulders, long deep body with powerful hindquarters. Its colouring is Bay with black points, lower legs mane & tail.

The Cleveland Bay horse is well known for it courage, strength and stamina. Its responsibilities to the royal family demonstrate its intelligent, calm and sensible nature.

Cleveland Bay thoroughbred horses make excellent competition horses especially for in show jumping events. They make very good hunters owing to their stamina and calm temperament.
