Friesian horsesOrigin of the Friesian Horse

The Friesian horse is one of the oldest European breeds native to the Netherlands. Originally used as a military horse by the Romans, the Friesian has also been used for riding, agricultural work, and as a cavalry and a carriage horse. The popularity of the Friesian horse declined and by the beginning of World War I was in danger of extinction, but revival of the breed began during World War II when there was a shortage of vehicles.

The Friesian Horse stands 14.3 to 15.3 hh.


Appearance of the Friesian Horse

The Friesian horse has a long head, strong body, full mane and thick tail. Friesians are powerfully muscled with agile with elegant movement. They are always black but can have a small white star on the forehead.


Temperament of the Friesian Horse

Friesian Horses are companionable, willing, hard-working and sensitive.


Uses of the Friesian Horse

The Friesian horse is used for dressage, driving and as a circus horse. The Friesian is also good as a general riding horse.
